The Legend of Jean Claude Van Damme

Jean-Claude Camille François Van Varenberg was born in Belgium in 1960 and began training in shotokan karate at the age of 10, eventually earning a black belt and later won the European Professional Karate Association's middleweight championship. He has also won a Mr Belgium bodybuilding title and studied ballet for 5 years from the age of 16.

JCVD has stared in many iconic films of the 1980s and 1990s and even appeared in the best live-action Streetfighter film ever made (as Guile) , alongside Kylie Minogue and Raul Julia.

JCVD is a big hit with the ladeez and to prove it here is a scene from Friends (it is no coincidence that this was the most watched Friends episode ever)

Because one Jean Claude is not just not enough for his fans he has often appeared in dual roles in films many times including Double Impact, Universal Soldier, Timecop, Maxiumum Risk, The Order and Replicant.

My personal favourite JCVD film is Kickboxer, where JCVDs brother is mercilessly killed by Muai Thai kickboxer Tong-Fu, and he trains in this art to get his revenge. This film also contains a great dance scene.

Please note that many JCVD films may appear at first to be bad, but often they have hidden comedy depths and so they become great. As my good friend Priest knows JCVD is a master of the splits and he can pull them off at any time, and often without warning. So watch out!

Here is JCVD kicking a bottle off someone's head

RiKo: Let me start by saying, thanks buddy for starting this long overdue threadThumbs Up

Well there is a lot to be said about Jean Claude Van Damme "inofficial master of unexpected splits".

For now I´m going to settle with listing the 10 best splits done by MR JCVD in various movies:

1. In my opinion th indisputable best "No retreat no surrender split". Done by JCVD playing the role of a "bad-guy-karate-demon-from-hell"

2. Bloodsport "split with a view"

and from a bonus angle:

AH RiKo! JCVD is the MAN!

Love all his films (more or less!) I'm aware he gets a lot of stick for being slow and couldn't handle himself in real fight etc etc... but he has actually, to the best of my knowledge, fought in and won numerous tournaments throughout his M.Arts career prior to being an actor.

LAST WEEKEND... I watched the JCVD movie that was recently released here on DVD. It was a great film and gave a little more insight into the life behind the legend. There's a point in the film where he 'spills' it all (I won't go too in-depth for those who haven't BUT should see it Wink ) and I actually found the scene a rather emotional experience Real Sad

MY FAVE JCVD FILM has to be HardTarget! I absolutely f*cking love this film. John Woo made some pretty damn cool action sequences, the bad guys are as cool as f*ck (Mr Van Cleef/Arnold Vosloo "I know you didn't mean to... hurt... my feelings"Wink and obviously Mr Fucho (Lance Henriksen) is also as hard as nails with his drop-top XJS & single-shot gun of death! The scene where he retrieves 'Nat's' handbag in the first fightscene is AMAZING including dialogue such as: Van Damme - "Why don't you take your big-stick and your boyfriend and find a bus to catch" responded to by "Ho... this guys funny!" YEAH? GUESS WHAT? I f*ckin' agree! Funnier still? Your 2 milliseconds away from taking a steel-toe capped Jago-style splitting wind kick to the face! Bon Apetit m*therf*cker!! SERIOUSLY THOUGH... I could harp on about this movie all day long.

"NEXT time I come here Randall, I cut me a steak!!"
Mr Van Cleef

WOW... Just found this! For your consideration kind sirs (TERMINATE at 2.46)

Priest - Wow - thats a great top 10. I reckon JCVD's splits maybe down to his ballet training. I reckon his splits are a good distraction technique - people think WTF! Smile

Ninja - Great video Thumbs Up I only recently heard about that JCVD film. I want to see it!

THX - Shock lol - They should do a film where JCVD and Seagal meet prefarbly on a boat that has been taken over by terrorists or something. It would be like when De Niro and Paccino finally met in Heat (but better obviously). I do like Seagal films too, but he should stop those eco-warrior films.

Here's some info I found on Van Dammes fighting record.

When Jean-Claude Van Damme became an international film star, there was some debate as to his kick-boxing accomplishments. Former multiple World Kickboxing Champion Don "The Dragon" Wilson even offered Jean-Claude a "$100,000" bounty match to get into the ring and fight him. Van Damme brushed off the "challenge" as a publicity stunt. But, the truth of the matter was that Jean-Claude Van Damme was a successful international kick-boxer, who competed in Europe and the United States during the 1970s and early 1980s.

Van Damme began his martial arts training at the age of twelve under the guidance of Master Claude Goetz in Brussels, Belgium. Van Damme trained for 4 years before Master Goetz would allow him to fight in tournament competition. Jean-Claude's debut in 1976, at the age of 16, almost ended in failure. Competing under his birth name of Jean Claude Van Varenberg, Jean-Claude was staggered by a round-house kick thrown by fellow countryman, Toon Van Oostrum in Brussels, Belgium. Van Damme was badly stunned, but came back to knockout Van Oostrum moments later. The experience left an impact on Claude Goetz and he felt that Jean-Claude needed more training before competing again.

After two more years of intense training and sparring, Master Goetz decided to unleash his prized pupil on the European Full-Contact scene. Jean-Claude won his first tournament by scoring 3 knockout victories in one evening. A few months later at Iseghem, Belgium, Van Damme knocked out fellow prospect Emile Leibman in the first round. After compiling an undefeated full-contact record of 10-0 (10 knockouts), Master Goetz decided to take Jean-Claude to the United States to compete in the WAKO (World All-Styles Kickboxing Organization)World Full-Contact Championships in Tampa, Florida.

In order to win the world championship, the winning fighter would have to defeat 5 opponents at the tournament. In his opening match, Jean-Claude faced knockout artist, 'Sherman 'Big Train' Bergman' (from Miami Beach, Florida. Bergman's southpaw stance caught Van Damme by surprise, and for the first and only time in his career, Jean-Claude was knocked to the canvas after absorbing a powerful left hook. Van Damme however, showed the martial arts world that he was for real; he climbed off the canvas and with a perfectly timed ax-kick, knocked Bergman out cold in 59 seconds of the first round.

In the quarter-finals, Jean-Claude knocked out South American Gilberto Diaz in 13 seconds with a spinning back-fist. Diaz had won 15 consecutive full-contact matches prior to this match. According to sources, Van Damme became over-confident following his first two victories, and strayed from his spartan training lifestyle. This may be true, or it may not, regardless, Jean-Claude Van Damme lost a 2-round decision to fellow countryman Patrick Teugels in the semi-finals, and failed in his first and only attempt at winning a world title.

A dejected Van Damme returned to Europe determined to reestablish his career. After two tune-up fights, Van Damme scored an upset over former European Karate Champion Micheal Heming. In March, 1980, Jean-Claude scored another upset with a knockout over France's Georges Verlugels in 2 rounds to win the European Professional Middleweight Kickboxing Championship. After this victory, Van Damme caught the attention of the European martial arts community. Professional Karate Magazine publisher and editor, Mike Anders and multiple European Champion Geet Lemmens tabbed Jean-Claude Van Damme as an upcoming prospect. However, Jean-Claude's ambitions now focused in the direction of movie acting. Before he retired from active competition, Jean-Claude defeated Patrick Teugels in under two minutes in their rematch. Following the victory, Jean-Claude retired from fighting. His record fought under full-contact rules, was 18-1 (18 knockouts). Some sources have listed his record as 17-1 (17 Knockouts).

After Jean-Claude's film career took off, controversy arose because none of his fights were found. Some experts blasted Van Damme as a fake, saying he only had one amateur fight which he lost. But research and the Internet have finally cleared things up. Jean-Claude Van Damme fought his entire fight career under his birth name of Van Varenberg. Also, videos of his fights now appear on the Internet, including his victories over Teugels, Diaz, and Bergman.

Too bad the guy is an arrogant dousche bag off screen.

I lost any respect I had for guy back in the mid 1990's

Laughed my ass off when Chuck Zeto smacked him at Scores for talking s*#t Wink

That said alot of his movies were fun to watch though a bit generic at best.

What happened with that Scores thing Candycab? I haven't heard about that.

Anyway JCVD must be pretty cool because in the video below he finds out that the there is trouble in Videogame Land and decides to help! Despite finding it hard to contain his greatness within a single game cartridge he shrinks himself down and melds with a videogame.

It is hard at first but he soon finds it easy when he realises that most enemies here only take one hit and that he can jump abnormally high - sweet!

Im sure youve dug up some info already but this is what I gathered from watching Howard Stern as a few of his staff were actually witness to it, namely Ronnie the limo driver. that guy practically lives at Scores as does Chuck Smile

http://www.chuckz...ault2.htm ] Van Dammne made the mistake of insulting alot of the girls while at Scores and it culminated with Van Damn telling another dude right in front of Chuck "Chuck Zito has no heart".

Zito said lets take it outside and before Van Dammne got out of the front door Zito punched him in the face and just about knocked him out cold, after which Van Dammne called a truce. Alot of people are crying cheap shot but in the real world in a real fight there is no such thing.

The reality is the guy who goes off first usually wins and Zito knows this well and advocates it. After this went down Zito said there are no hard feelings but guys sometimes need to be put in their place and if people are going to disrespect people he calls friend and wemon in generall while in his prescence or otherwise he wont hesitate giving them lesson in manners.

Ive seen him on Howard Stern many times over the years and he is way old school when it comes to respecting others, he is a stand up guy with strong convictions who isnt affraid to let you know it.

Thats pretty much the bulk of it, I guess van Dammne had been talking junk in the past while frequenting the club.

Thanks Candy Smile - it would have been cooler if they had had a fight in the parking lot though, esp since Zito is meant to be a martial artist too.

At the end of the day though JCVD is still a legend and the man with a thread on NG4L! .........and Chuck Zito is still Van Damme's ex-bodyguard.
