This is a different fighting game, that's for sure…. Gals Fighters was one of the last fighting games developed for the NGPC and it certainly shows it! The speed of the game is much quicker and smoother than any other fighter on the system. But, first things first… what's the story? Well, Gals Fighters is essentially a Dream Match. The full character roster is Leona, Mai, Yuri, Athena and Shermie of KOF, Shiki and Nakoruru of Samurai Shodown, and Akari from Last Blade…. Someone for everyone really then, well… except for Blue Mary fans. :( All of them have entered a tournament called QOF (Go on, Guess what the initials are) to win K's Talisman, which has the ability to grant any wish…
Gals Fighters doesn't play like any other SNK fighter I've ever played. It seems like SNK's answer to Capcom's Marvel series, in that combo's that would have been impossible to do in say, KOF, work fine here. KOF's basics remain though. Rolling, Super bars, Guard Crush, Reversals, Etc. all work fine here, but the moves are all a little “Crazier” For Example: Yuri's Qcf + K resulted in the opponent being hit with Yuris closed fists, here she hits them with a hammer… Also, she can call on Mr Karate to throw super fireballs as well, just to liven things up a bit J These reworked moves work very well in the game, and give it its own “feel” and not just like KOF, but with all the men gone.
Another cool feature about Gals Fighters is the items you can collect. When you beat someone in the 1p mode, sometimes you'll be rewarded with an item… these vary according to fighter beat, and allow you to get the upper hand on CPU opponents. It also gives you a reason to come back to it, If only to find an elusive item that you haven't found yet.
In terms of Graphics and Sound… the game works very well! All of the sprites have been redrawn and the backgrounds and music are all totally new, so the game keeps its fresh look and feel. The games also full of neat touches…. Such as the pictures that flash up when you Super KO someone and the conversations with the final boss which are all hilarious… So are there any flaws? Not really. Lastability may be an issue, as there are only three other fighters hidden in the game. Also, the only modes available are Arcade, Verses and Training. But, getting all of the items will take a while, and the gameplay is so different, you'll want to play it for quite a long time. Of course getting hold of this game now can be tough…. Especially an English Version. But don't give up! This is one of the best Fighters on the NGPC!
